rose_original.jpgA Hutchinson native, I am a partner in a law firm and currently, the mayor. I ran for city council in 2007 to bring progressive ideas to city government. We need to look beyond the way it's always been done, and as a start, include more people in the process. On the 4th Saturday of the month I hold a coffee with anyone who wants to come and share ideas. I have two boys who live in Lawrence, ages 22 and 24. My other interests are jogging, playing piano, and golf.

I just got back from the animal shelter.  Pepper, my 13 year old lab, died several months ago and after a few days of “there will never be another dog as great as Pepper”, I have considered adopting another.  If you are in the market for a dog, make your first stop our animal shelter.

We have a first class animal shelter.

The City Budget - What's Your Opinion? PDF Print E-mail

Mention the word “budget” and my eyes begin to glaze over.   What we spend now, what we spent in the past, what we think we will spend in the future-nothing about any of that is very exciting or engaging.  In the city manager’s office, budget is always on the “to do” list.  John could use a separate desk for his budget planning since it is something he works on all year round.   We can help.

What I knew about Mixed Martial Arts before the December 2 city council meeting—very little.  When my oldest son Nick told me he was coming to Hutchinson one weekend last spring to attend an event at the Grand Prairie my reaction was “huh?”  He tried to describe to me what it was all about.  Little did I know it would be an issue before the council later in the year.

To smoke or not to smoke, that is not the question.  Lucky for me, I struggled with asthma as a young child and teen, so being around smoke was something I avoided and was never tempted to try for myself.  The question for me as a city council member is whether to support a city ordinance that bans smoking in all public places.

The first realization I had upon becoming a city council member was that money is tight.  There is pressure to not raise the mill levy.  Health insurance, salaries, fuel, emergency services—none of these ever decrease in cost.  Where does the money for special projects, ideas and innovations come from?  From a little talked about pot of money created by a permanent ½ cent sales tax.
