Book Club

Welcome to the Hutchinson News Book Club blog.

We read books, offer our insights on them and provide discussion questions. Other book clubs, or even individual readers, can follow along.

We’ve been reading and writing for the print edition of The News for about a year. But on this blog, anyone can jump into the discussion.

We want this blog to be a forum for kindred spirits who know that escaping into a good book is better than seeing the best of Hollywood.

Here’s a little about us, the News’ book club members:

Davina: Not a literary expert, but an avid reader who loves fiction and copes with nonfiction when the book club demands it.

Wendy: Has studied English at the graduate level and is much more critical of prose. She looks for literary themes, depth of character and strength of prose.

Kathy: Out-reads us all and has more enthusiasm for books in her pinky than most people do in their whole bodies. She’s the driving force behind our book selections because she’s always discovering a new author worth exploring.

We meet to talk about the books we read. But here, we hope to branch out from discussion amongst ourselves to interaction with you.

Please join the discussion. We look forward to it.

Two women from different Afghan ethnic groups find their lives yoked together after tragedies befall them in Khaled Hosseini's novel "A Thousand Splendid Suns."

The novel, divided into four parts, traces the history of Afghanistan from 1959 through contemporary times, told through the lives of Mariam and Laila.

Readers first meet Mariam, born in 1959, an illegitimate child who suffers shame and hardship throughout her life. About 20 years later, Laila is born down the city street from Mariam in Kabul. Laila is an intelligent, modern girl raised in a home filled with books, and is doted on by her professor father.
