Cody's Thoughts on Kansas Underground Salt Museum
Page 2

I am Cody Heitschmidt and you have found yourself trapped in Cody's thoughts.

If you haven't you should glance over the About WUH? page!

Here's how my column here will work.

1. I will post some of my thoughts on a regular basis. Regular meaning kinda what ever it ends up meaning. At least once a week is probably the best definition I can give right now.
2. You will either read what I put up here or not.
3. You will either comment on what I write or not.

4. I will delete your comment if it is worse than R rated, unrelated, etc.... No "or not" there.
5. We will turn this into a great place to discuss topics that affect us as people that have some sort of a connection to Hutchinson, Ks. No "or not" here either, we are gonna make this one happen for sure.
There you go... That's it. We are gonna try to keep it Hutch focused but sometimes more worldly stuff affects us as well and in the long run this is my column so I will decide.
Don't hesitate to send comments or email me with ideas or criticisms. If you don't like it and you don't do anything proactive, your just a bum!!!

You can always contact me here!!

OK on with the first column:

First topic is the Underground Salt Museum.

What's your thoughts???
Here's mine (MINE?!?!?! Get it??)

It's freaking awesome...

Anytime you have a something that is the only one in a hemisphere... you have something pretty cool.
The displays down there will get better and evolve and new ones will be brought in. Those there now are pretty cool though.

So that being said... the museum is awesome and unique and getting better and the fact that its a 650 foot deep hole in the ground is cool as hell.
Why does all the press seem horrible about it and every body in town laughs when you bring it up and all we talk about is tax dollars going there to keep it afloat???

Here's why in my opinion. (3 reasons)

1. Poor PR and marketing. (****disclaimer - I work for a company that does some PR and some Marketing, by deciding to go ahead and do this column, I am willing to forever refuse to take money from the Underground Salt Museum. I am not hoping to gain business by posting this, I am hoping to stop using my tax dollars for the museum) OK the marketing, let's go ahead and jump that into the at least the late 20th century. The Internet should be 95% of the focus of the marketing in that place.

2. Refusal initially to give Reno County residents a discount. Talk about crapping in your own backyard. I don't know the current status of this, but if there is still no discount, it is time to beg forgiveness and give one. That's just how this community works. We want rewarded for using our tax dollars on something. It would send more people down the shaft. Southwest Airlines is the only airline to post a profit since the Wright Brothers. The reason is they would rather have $50.00 and an ass in the seat than no $$$ and an empty seat. Give the old folks of Reno County a $2 discount for coming on your least busy day of the week or during least busy hours. That's easy huh?? Just do it and see what happens, let me know if I am wrong, I am wrong. I will admit it.

3. The vocal people in Reno County tend to be whiners in general and really accentuate the negative. Can we ever do anything about that?? Read on...

Here's the marketing plan:

1. Tell the marketing person (no need for names, this isn't his/her fault, it's a mentality in this town.) to sit on the Internet for 3 or 4 days and invite every blogger (both professional and private) they can possibly find to come and go down the hole for free. Obviously some thought has to be placed into how many (it should be 150 plus bloggers as the goal) and scheduling their individual elevator rides, but they are all gonna go back and publish their visit on the Internet. By inviting those people down the hole you will touch hundreds of thousands of people who follow them. The point is blog readers follow bloggers, they are fans, not readers of a magazine or a newspaper they are fans!!! Their opinions are molded by the things bloggers say and/or the discussions on the blogs.

2. Pick 10 gigantic bloggers and send them a plane ticket and take good care of them while they are here. Get Cosmosphere to kick in to help, obviously the Cosmosphere would be part of their trip and get a hotel to help and a couple restaurants. $10,000 total expense split between Museum, Cosmosphere, Convention&Visitors bureau, etc... Bring them in wine and dine them, get them a private Underground Vaults and Storage tour,, etc... Those 10 people will expose you to millions of people.

Those 2 things will get you more freaking exposure around the world than you can deal with .

PR - Let the people of Reno County know everything, be open, ask for their help. Ask them to email your website to 25 friends that might not know about it that live within 100 miles. Ask for the citizens of Reno Counties help in getting the word to everyone who has a car in Wichita. If you keep them informed and ask nicely, most of the people in this town would help. There is nothing wrong with admitting you need help and grass roots is the most powerful marketing in the world.

4 steps right there:

1. Give Reno County residents a discount on slow days or during slow hours (if that's already happening sorry I couldn't find the info, which pretty much makes it worthless that it is happening)
2. Attack the blog world. Technorati (click here ) Google Blog Search (Click here ) Bloglines (click Here ) Those are places to find lists of blogs. Just invite tons of them by email, do a nice individual email to each one with someone at the museums  contacts info, tell them if they visit you will link back to their blog post about the trip and offer them free admission.
3. Use those same 3 websites get bloggers with 20,000 plus page views a day and wine and dine them.
4. Talk to and ask for the help of the people of Reno County.

(If you wanted to take out number 2 for a while, then... this is essentially a free plan, anybody notice that?)

You can do something about the whiners (thinking you can't and being quiet and not destroying their arguments, that's the definition of bad PR!!!) Make the thing a giant success and the whiners end up looking like... Whiners.

Let me also say this, I don't blame anyone at KUSM for anything that I see as being done wrong, it is a mentality in our area that makes most marketing very inefficient and ineffective.

If someone wants any form of my help. Contact me here. ZERo Charge for more ideas and consulting.

Last thing: Everyone that ever reads this, if you took the next 15 minutes and sent an email to everyone you know about the Underground Salt Museum, you would truly make a difference for a Non-profit and to some extent lessen the amount of tax dollars needed to run it. What if the thing started putting money back.

Here's the Underground Museums website. If you want just click the email this page link at the top of this page to as many people as the thing will let you. Let's actually do something about this as opposed to just wondering whats gonna happen.

Let the comments roll .........................!

I've changed career plans Cody. I want to grow up to be a gigantic, popular blogger!

Your idea is very interesting - I love how your mind works, so free and uninencumbered. (well, usually)

I don't mind putting some tax money into an attraction that will bring more sales tax dollars to the community. Doesn't the Cosmosphere receive on an annual basis a much bigger sum than what the salt museum is getting?

I appreciate your comments about negative attitudes and agree but I've learned that it takes time to change people's perceptions and attitudes, especially about how they feel about their own back yard, it's never as good as the neighbors. We will just keep working at this and coming up with unique ideas like yours to move us forward.

I'll be sending out e-mails to friends reminding them of what's in their own backyard and urging them to get out and see Kansas with new eyes!!!

Hi Cody,

Thanks for saying that KUSM is "freaking awesome!" I couldn't agree more!! I also applaud your efforts to get a conversation going and agree with many of your ideas. You are so right-we could and should be using the internet more to our advantage and are working on that right now. Some bloggers have been down and hopefully more will come. As for flying people in-not on our present budget-Maybe someday.

We were thrilled to have over 61,000 people visit our museum in our first year of operation and at least 20% of them were from out of state and many from abroad. Most were from the Wichita metro and about 19% were from Reno County. In the past year, we have offered periodic price reductions for county residents and these will continue-especially for those who come multiple times. I am sure that these initiatives will increase as we become more financially successful. Unlike the Cosmosphere, we do not have "pieces" of our attraction that we can provide free. When our new Visitor Center opens in July, there will be topside exhibits that will be free to the public.

Speaking of finances, KUSM is now holding its own. We have surpassed our visitor/budget projections every week in 2008 and are in the process of putting back a reserve to get us through the slower months next winter. We will not have to go back to the city or county to ask for funds and are very grateful to the city for helping us through our first winter. As you know, as a business owner, startup is difficult. Although we are solid financially, we are still on a break-even budget that does not allow for growth. We are very pleased to be on the ballot with the Cosmosphere for the 1/4 cent sales tax. The 5% that we would receive equals roughly the same percentage of budget received by the Cosmosphere from the tax. The $102,000 that this will provide will be what we need to grow our programs and continue to develop.

I believe that we have been and are totally open with Reno County residents about our finances and needs and they have responded very positively. Our new exhibit, opening next weekend is a good example. It has been totally funded by community members and the Geological Survey Foundation.

It troubles me when you say that "people laugh when you bring it up." I hope that you are exaggerating. My impression is that most people are proud to have this "Wonder" in Hutchinson and I hope that those who doubt our credibility will just come and see for themselves.

Again, thanks for opening up the dialog and for your good ideas.

Incredible....

Ok disclaimer first.... Linda Schmitt is the mother of one of my best friends in the entire world and I want that out up front. She's also someone I have known and respected for just about as long as I can remember (more than 20 years). She is also someone that I knew could handle me Devil's advocating this thing.

Linda,

I don't know if I would say I was exaggerating. I truly feel if you and I just walked down the street and polled people... we would get at least 70% (completely made up # but I stand behind it.) of people giving us a negative perception of the Museum. Please, Please, Please note that I pointed out in number three in my column that I believe one of the factors in that is that the most vocal people in this community are often times whiners. No bones about it they are gonna bitch about anything anyone does anytime anywhere. I do however stand behind my point that I think the PR is lacking... I may be the only person in the county that didn't know the financial stuff you laid out in your comment but I would contend that most don't.

I "THINK" that if you went full tilt on making the public (Reno County taxpayers) aware that you are making progress that more of them would ride down your elevator on a regular basis. PR can be free. I know how hard you are working Linda... I don't (never have) question your dedication to any of the very cool and noble things you have made happen in this community. But good PR and getting your neighbors to back something is a never ending battle and far and away the most important battle to be fought.

You have an open invitation to start the process here on www.whatsuphutch.com we will do anything you want to help KUSM succeed. I truly believe that KUSM has the potential to relieve our tax burden at some time in the future as opposed to adding to it. And I am willing to dedicate some of the feeble resources I have to make it happen.

Please feel free to call or email and we will do whatever you want.

Thanks so much for responding.

Cody,

Thanks for your kind words and I know that you know that I like and respect you and Tamara and have been following the success of Logic Maze with pleasure and pride.

The fact is that we have been enjoying an incredible amount of free and great publicity for months now online and in local and regional papers. The 8 Wonders of Kansas and Reno County generated stories and picture statewide, a huge front page article regarding the Fluid Inclusion exhibit (where viable bacteria was discovered in 250 million year old salt crystals), news about our collaboration with the Cosmosphere in marketing thanks to a generous donation from the Davis Foundation, our record attendance the week of the NJCAA basketball tournament, our upcoming Murder in the Mine dinner theatre on June 7, our financial turnaround, the Dance with a Taste of Salt show that Artistree is holding at the Fox this weekend, as well as stories about the sales tax renewal and multiple editorials. I am sure that I have left out some. Mary Clarkin, Clara Kilborne and John Montgomery have been streaming out nothing but consistent good news on our behalf for months. I could go into all of the other state and national and even international publications that we have been featured in this past year but I won't. Now, we are also doing our own TV advertising in addition to the efforts of the State CVB's tourism spots and of course the local Welcome Channel. I could also mention that we have rack cards everywhere in Kansas and 4 additional states.

Could we do more marketing? Of course! We have largely depended on free marketing since reducing our budget in December but are now beginning to ramp back up. I welcome anyone's ideas as to how we can market more effectively and so does our staff and marketing agency.

Your comments make me want to stand out on the street corner and do my own poll. In fact, part of the awareness campaign that we will be initiating prior to the sales tax election will be focus groups and I hope that many will participate.

You didn't mention in your article whether you and your family have been down. I stand behind my opinion that once you see it, you become an ambassador just like the delegation from Portugal that visited last Fall. They are using our museum as a model as they develop their own Salt Museum.

I also didn't mention that we had over 6,000 students underground this past school year-many from Reno County- who hopefully will bring their parents this summer.

Believe me, I could go on all day like this. Everyone who visits agrees that KUSM is fantastic and they become our staunch allies against what I still believe is far less than 70%.

I had better get back to work!! All the best!

Linda

Linda,

that is exactly the data I am wanting to hear.

Here my admission on this, maybe i am not paying attention..

Maybe I am the exception to the rule.

6,000 students is incredible, should I have known that already? Has that been publicized??

I have been down and the beginning of my original post here was me being an ambassador.

I am all about the free publicity in fact taking advantage of that is exactly what this post started out as.

i am behind you....

Here is my offer, I think some of us that don't read the Hutch News all the way through are lacking on whats going on .... I want to do a web cast interview with you... not aggressive crap, just you telling us what's going on.

We have had a little over 200 people on this site in the first 11 hours of it's existence if you are willing to sit down sometime and do web cast i will set it up and we can give you one more avenue to get the word out and answer some of the questions out there.

Thanks again, I am even more excited about the Museum's possibilities than I was.

Im gonna have to agree with a point. ill be the other end of the spectrum since you two have been down there and speek about it from your experience with going down into the mine.
I havent been down the mine and i always think "whats down there thats worth my time"? i dont think ive ever seen a picture of exhibits or anything besides a picture of the tunnel. i think "WOW...walls..with salt..awesome =/"
i understand putting pictures out of exhibits would give it away but no one knows whats down there unless maybe theyve heard it from someone else. someone enlighten me and convince me to spend $? to see whats down there because i dont even know how much it costs.

JoshR does a great job of providing another example or add-on to my original point.

Josh R this is what I am asking of you, help us change that perception...

We are gonna set up a live web cast of an interview with Linda who is the Exec director of the Historical society, which runs the Salt Museum,

JoshR when I get this all put together will you help us get the word out so people can get their questions answered??
