Page 1 of 2 I am Cody Heitschmidt and you have found yourself trapped in Cody's thoughts.
If you haven't you should glance over the About WUH? page!
Here's how my column here will work.
4. I will delete your comment if it is worse than R rated, unrelated, etc.... No "or not" there.
Anytime you have a something that is the only one in a hemisphere... you have something pretty cool.
1. 23-05-2008 01:31 Little hard on them aren't yeah!!! I mean who doesn't want to just keep throwing our tax dollars down a hole that big. 2. 23-05-2008 08:58 I've changed career plans Cody. I want to grow up to be a gigantic, popular blogger! Your idea is very interesting - I love how your mind works, so free and uninencumbered. (well, usually) I don't mind putting some tax money into an attraction that will bring more sales tax dollars to the community. Doesn't the Cosmosphere receive on an annual basis a much bigger sum than what the salt museum is getting? I appreciate your comments about negative attitudes and agree but I've learned that it takes time to change people's perceptions and attitudes, especially about how they feel about their own back yard, it's never as good as the neighbors. We will just keep working at this and coming up with unique ideas like yours to move us forward. I'll be sending out e-mails to friends reminding them of what's in their own backyard and urging them to get out and see Kansas with new eyes!!! WenDee 3. 23-05-2008 10:24 Hi Cody, Thanks for saying that KUSM is "freaking awesome!" I couldn't agree more!! I also applaud your efforts to get a conversation going and agree with many of your ideas. You are so right-we could and should be using the internet more to our advantage and are working on that right now. Some bloggers have been down and hopefully more will come. As for flying people in-not on our present budget-Maybe someday. We were thrilled to have over 61,000 people visit our museum in our first year of operation and at least 20% of them were from out of state and many from abroad. Most were from the Wichita metro and about 19% were from Reno County. In the past year, we have offered periodic price reductions for county residents and these will continue-especially for those who come multiple times. I am sure that these initiatives will increase as we become more financially successful. Unlike the Cosmosphere, we do not have "pieces" of our attraction that we can provide free. When our new Visitor Center opens in July, there will be topside exhibits that will be free to the public. Speaking of finances, KUSM is now holding its own. We have surpassed our visitor/budget projections every week in 2008 and are in the process of putting back a reserve to get us through the slower months next winter. We will not have to go back to the city or county to ask for funds and are very grateful to the city for helping us through our first winter. As you know, as a business owner, startup is difficult. Although we are solid financially, we are still on a break-even budget that does not allow for growth. We are very pleased to be on the ballot with the Cosmosphere for the 1/4 cent sales tax. The 5% that we would receive equals roughly the same percentage of budget received by the Cosmosphere from the tax. The $102,000 that this will provide will be what we need to grow our programs and continue to develop. I believe that we have been and are totally open with Reno County residents about our finances and needs and they have responded very positively. Our new exhibit, opening next weekend is a good example. It has been totally funded by community members and the Geological Survey Foundation. It troubles me when you say that "people laugh when you bring it up." I hope that you are exaggerating. My impression is that most people are proud to have this "Wonder" in Hutchinson and I hope that those who doubt our credibility will just come and see for themselves. Again, thanks for opening up the dialog and for your good ideas. Linda Schmitt, Executive Director, Reno County Historical Society 4. 23-05-2008 13:03 Incredible.... Ok disclaimer first.... Linda Schmitt is the mother of one of my best friends in the entire world and I want that out up front. She's also someone I have known and respected for just about as long as I can remember (more than 20 years). She is also someone that I knew could handle me Devil's advocating this thing. Linda, I don't know if I would say I was exaggerating. I truly feel if you and I just walked down the street and polled people... we would get at least 70% (completely made up # but I stand behind it.) of people giving us a negative perception of the Museum. Please, Please, Please note that I pointed out in number three in my column that I believe one of the factors in that is that the most vocal people in this community are often times whiners. No bones about it they are gonna bitch about anything anyone does anytime anywhere. I do however stand behind my point that I think the PR is lacking... I may be the only person in the county that didn't know the financial stuff you laid out in your comment but I would contend that most don't. I "THINK" that if you went full tilt on making the public (Reno County taxpayers) aware that you are making progress that more of them would ride down your elevator on a regular basis. PR can be free. I know how hard you are working Linda... I don't (never have) question your dedication to any of the very cool and noble things you have made happen in this community. But good PR and getting your neighbors to back something is a never ending battle and far and away the most important battle to be fought. You have an open invitation to start the process here on www.whatsuphutch.com we will do anything you want to help KUSM succeed. I truly believe that KUSM has the potential to relieve our tax burden at some time in the future as opposed to adding to it. And I am willing to dedicate some of the feeble resources I have to make it happen. Please feel free to call or email and we will do whatever you want. Thanks so much for responding. Cody 5. 23-05-2008 14:06 Cody, Thanks for your kind words and I know that you know that I like and respect you and Tamara and have been following the success of Logic Maze with pleasure and pride. The fact is that we have been enjoying an incredible amount of free and great publicity for months now online and in local and regional papers. The 8 Wonders of Kansas and Reno County generated stories and picture statewide, a huge front page article regarding the Fluid Inclusion exhibit (where viable bacteria was discovered in 250 million year old salt crystals), news about our collaboration with the Cosmosphere in marketing thanks to a generous donation from the Davis Foundation, our record attendance the week of the NJCAA basketball tournament, our upcoming Murder in the Mine dinner theatre on June 7, our financial turnaround, the Dance with a Taste of Salt show that Artistree is holding at the Fox this weekend, as well as stories about the sales tax renewal and multiple editorials. I am sure that I have left out some. Mary Clarkin, Clara Kilborne and John Montgomery have been streaming out nothing but consistent good news on our behalf for months. I could go into all of the other state and national and even international publications that we have been featured in this past year but I won't. Now, we are also doing our own TV advertising in addition to the efforts of the State CVB's tourism spots and of course the local Welcome Channel. I could also mention that we have rack cards everywhere in Kansas and 4 additional states. Could we do more marketing? Of course! We have largely depended on free marketing since reducing our budget in December but are now beginning to ramp back up. I welcome anyone's ideas as to how we can market more effectively and so does our staff and marketing agency. Your comments make me want to stand out on the street corner and do my own poll. In fact, part of the awareness campaign that we will be initiating prior to the sales tax election will be focus groups and I hope that many will participate. You didn't mention in your article whether you and your family have been down. I stand behind my opinion that once you see it, you become an ambassador just like the delegation from Portugal that visited last Fall. They are using our museum as a model as they develop their own Salt Museum. I also didn't mention that we had over 6,000 students underground this past school year-many from Reno County- who hopefully will bring their parents this summer. Believe me, I could go on all day like this. Everyone who visits agrees that KUSM is fantastic and they become our staunch allies against what I still believe is far less than 70%. I had better get back to work!! All the best! Linda 6. 23-05-2008 14:23 Linda, that is exactly the data I am wanting to hear. Here my admission on this, maybe i am not paying attention.. Maybe I am the exception to the rule. 6,000 students is incredible, should I have known that already? Has that been publicized?? I have been down and the beginning of my original post here was me being an ambassador. I am all about the free publicity in fact taking advantage of that is exactly what this post started out as. i am behind you.... Here is my offer, I think some of us that don't read the Hutch News all the way through are lacking on whats going on .... I want to do a web cast interview with you... not aggressive crap, just you telling us what's going on. We have had a little over 200 people on this site in the first 11 hours of it's existence if you are willing to sit down sometime and do web cast i will set it up and we can give you one more avenue to get the word out and answer some of the questions out there. Thanks again, I am even more excited about the Museum's possibilities than I was. 7. 23-05-2008 20:48 Anytime Cody, I will look forward to it. 8. 24-05-2008 18:02 Im gonna have to agree with a point. ill be the other end of the spectrum since you two have been down there and speek about it from your experience with going down into the mine. I havent been down the mine and i always think "whats down there thats worth my time"? i dont think ive ever seen a picture of exhibits or anything besides a picture of the tunnel. i think "WOW...walls..with salt..awesome =/" i understand putting pictures out of exhibits would give it away but no one knows whats down there unless maybe theyve heard it from someone else. someone enlighten me and convince me to spend $? to see whats down there because i dont even know how much it costs. 9. 24-05-2008 23:07 JoshR does a great job of providing another example or add-on to my original point. Josh R this is what I am asking of you, help us change that perception... We are gonna set up a live web cast of an interview with Linda who is the Exec director of the Historical society, which runs the Salt Museum, JoshR when I get this all put together will you help us get the word out so people can get their questions answered?? 10. 25-05-2008 00:36 Yea no problem. ill spread word about it and maybe get myself to go down into the mine soon but ill also be gone starting wednesday for a couple of weeks =S not sure how much of an internet connection ill have in the philippines but were staying in suites and i understand theres an internet cafe across the street. so whenever i can get on ill try to do what i can. |
