Dump Microsoft Outlook/Outlook Express

Get off Microsoft Email.

First of all, I am not a Microsoft hater. They have revolutionized our world and the vast majority of it was for the good.
My point is this... Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express are highly outdated and impeding your way of life if you rely on email at all.

How to stop using the programs listed above?

SWITCH TO WEBMAIL !!! (GMAIL, YAHOO, LIVE ) Just click one and get started. I like Gmail the best!

Why in the world would you switch? Here are a few good reasons.

1. File storage - The reason your computer is running way slower (one of the reasons) is all the darn files you downloaded through emails. Pictures of the kids, grandkids, videos, porn, power points, word documents, pdfs, whatever. It is filling up your computer.
No such problem with webmail (if you use it right) Just view things and don't download them, use the webmail provider's servers to store and view the images.

2. Cost - Webmail is free  - Next time you order a computer don't pay for Outlook. Heck, you can not pay for any Microsoft programs, if you don't want to. You can get replacements for all of it free (more on that later).

3. Portability - If you get on a plane and fly to Mozambique or OKC, any computer you find that has internet has access to your email and all the archive files. In fact, if your computer crashes and you get mad and throw it in the street and run over it repeatedly... all of your emails are going to be instantly accessible from the next computer you lay your hands on.

4. Security - If you never bring the email to your computer... You can never bring a virus to your computer... huh? That's right, no need for MCAfee virus protection to make everything you do take 15 minutes longer than it really needs to.

5. Ease of use - Just go try it. You will see how easy it is. If you have any questions at all, put them in the comments field on this column, and I will get them answered if possible.

6. No Updates to Fix Mistakes - If its broke they fix it 'cause it's on their servers they don't have to come into your house and force a update on you.

7. I said so........

8. I know for some of you it won't be as easy as for others. Just put your questions in the comments here, and we will help you out.

Trust me, you will love it in the long run.

Feel free to suggest items that you want to discuss on this column, if we don't know the answers, we will do the research and break it down for you.

That would ultimately depend on your webmail account. Though I'm not certain about all of them, Gmail (my preferred webmail provider) does allow you to import contacts from Outlook/Outlook Express.

First you'll have to export them from Outlook Express as a CSV(comma separated value). Then you should be able to import them into your webmail account.

Perhaps more detailed instructions could be another post to come.

Jadybug,

you can most definitely use your gmail to receive your standard outlook accounts. Just go into settings and then under "Get mail from other accounts:" click on "Add another email account". Then follow the steps. This will allow you to access any email account that you have the username and password for. Gmail really is the best!! You will Love it once you get it all figured out.

For what its worth, Gmail allows you to use your old email address. (Under accounts in the setup)

I agree that webmail (particularly gmail) is outstanding free software, and that Outlook Express is dated and feature poor. However, your advice mainly pertains to home users. Business users, especially large enterprise users would never want to have sensitive "internal" mail floating around on the Internet.

And gmail is free for a reason.. you are constantly bombarded with targeted advertising. To take that a step further, Yahoo and Live mail will append footers to your messages further promoting their web services. Users beware!

For 6 gig of free storage space, one of the most advanced spam filters available and some of the easiest and most intuitive filtering/labeling capabilities, I'll take the "bombardment."

It's also more secure than you think, though I could understand why some huge corporations might avoid it. Those people most likely aren't looking for alternatives, though, as they probably have an in-house mail server and an IT guy.

I don't know about you, but I don't even notice ads on the internet nowadays.

I don't notice the ads, either, Mitchell. I have been using gmail since it was in beta and it is by far my favorite of the services.
