See Some Shows This Weekend!
Page 2

We've got some entertainment happening in Hutch this weekend, if you're interested.

This Friday night, at the Red Lion, bluegrass band, Hutchinson expatriates and good friends of mine - Deadman Flats - will be playing. I strongly recommend checking it out. If you're not into bluegrass, you still may not be after the show, but I guarantee you'll have a good time. Pretty sure this one is 21 to enter.

But don't discourage, my underaged friends.

Our friends from Before the Hills tipped us off to a good time this Saturday at Carey Park. Here's the info they provided:

Saturday May 31st.

801 Elm Street
6pm!!!

Bands playing:

Ducks Fly Together
Charasmatic with an Automatic
Shotguns and Handshakes
Good Intentions
Diverge
Before The Hills

This show will start as close to 6 as possible so come out and enjoy.
Show your support kids we want you all there!!!!!! Don’t forget its FREE FREE FREE!

Thanks for the heads up, guys.

Holy moly, that's a lot of bands. Go check it out, if you can.

I hate to dampen anyones spirit on the free concerts. Yes they are free, the music is pretty good, however, I was not impressed. There were many underage kids going back and forth from cars drinking, smoking and God knows what else. There was alot of inappropriate behaviors lets say. I was shocked. It is not what happens right around the band, it is when the kids wander off to cars that scares me. I watched two underage girls go to the car with a band member, I was appauled. My opinion is that the bands are great but what the kids do there was unbelievable. There were kids higher than a kite flying glow sticks to the music, not a safe place for the underage kids. I am glad I took my 16 year old to check it out I definately will not let her go there again. I think they should have a few older adults looking out for the ounger teens.

I went to the red lion to check out the band. It is a nice little bar, non smoking(my favorite part). There was a younger crowd there but they were well behaved and did not bother anyone. the music was good if you like what they played ( I did not care for the techno death metal sound)but I had a good time and met alot of people. I will be visiting this place again.

About the free concert.. I didn't go - did talk to a great friend of mine that did go. He said it was well attended but really didn't comment much more. On the comment about the "back and forth to cars drinking" - this is really too bad and "way to go" to the parent that was there with their 16 to check it out!! Hopefully,in the future these events will be supervised and no alcohol will be allowed!

Lady, if you want parental supervision, then go with your kids. Otherwise, do not complain when a group of mostly 21+ kids are drinking. The cops showed up anyways and ticketed someone for using profanity. Maybe you should have buddied up with the cops, since you both seem to have similar interests. Trying to cause trouble for the local music scene is big fun. But hey, what do I know? Id rather my kids out trying new forms of dope then at a skate park possibly exposed to something they are going to have constant access to in a few years. Heres an idea, teach your kids about the dangers of drug use and give them freedom. Ultimately, all you can do is guide. Trying to repress too much develops neurosis, you know like the drug addiction kind. But what do I know?

Oh, and to the glowstick comment. Lady, you are extremely ignorant. Glowsticking to music has nothing to do with drugs inherently. People that are on drugs also do things like listen to music and eat. Does that mean that listening to music and eating is indicative of drug use? What about the drug culture surrounding some of the best musicians of our time? Miles Davis, Hendrix, you get the point.

Try informing yourself before conducting yourself in a manner exhibiting prejudice. I'm sure that your 16 year old will always do what you say. Hell, give it a few years and she might be hopping into the van with one of the band members. :-)

Lucifer- It is not to nice to get on here and call people ignorant. Wikipedia is a stupid source because any one who feels like can post answers on there whether or not they know anything about the subject. People "glowstick" when they are on drugs it is very common. Quit being so nasty.

Hey, so here we go. I know this is supposed to be open to the opinions of everyone and I definitely appreciate that, but it is much easier to discuss such things if you are not so aggressive. That statement is not meant for any specific person, I think that everybody who has commented about the skate park show has been a bit aggressive.

I was at the show. I am at most shows in hutch. A couple of my close friends are in one of the bands that played. I agree with the first statement about the fact that some actions of some of the people there are \\\\\\\"inappropriate\\\\\\\". But I know for a fact that such actions are not inherent and they are not forced actions. I have been going to similar shows in the park and other places for several years, and I have never once taken part in said \\\\\\\"inappropriate\\\\\\\" actions. It is a personal choice. There are always people there who are not under the influence of anything other than their own minds. I am one of those people. I go to enjoy the show and support the local music scene. I DO NOT go to get drunk, or to get high, or to engage in \\\\\\\"God knows what\\\\\\\" in cars with minors. As much as it amuses me to say this, I agree with Lucifer. You cannot shelter you children from everything. My parents did well. They gave me some basic information and have let me make my own decisions ever since. I am frequently in places where drug and alcohol use is present, but I never partake. Your child can go to these places and still come out clean, but you have to be confident with your parenting.

I have two more things to bring up. First, the use and connotations of \\\\\\\"glow sticking\\\\\\\" are probably the most trivial things we could possibly be debating. AJ is right in that people use glow sticks when they are high because they are fun to watch. Nonetheless, I am a huge advocate of pretty glowing flying colors, even though I am not high. Honestly, I love them, and use them often, but the use of glow sticks is not synonymous with drug use. In that respect I again agree with Lucifer.

The final thing I have to bring up concerns the safety of these shows. I understand that they look incredibly dangerous and unorganized, but these shows are quite safe. There is always someone nearby to help out if you need it and there is a lot of community within the scene. If someone needs help, they can almost always get it. In fact I would feel more safe at a skate park show that I would going to a much larger show anywhere else.

Lucifer...

Your points are correct! You can\\\'t completely monitor your kids in everything they do and no matter where they go they could be exposed to anything. Obviously glowsticking doesn\\\'t always equal drugs. So... Great points... Horrible delivery... You getting sarcastic and derogatory serves no purpose other than to make you look like a jerk. It\\\'s completely within you rights... and we appreciate that and are more than happy to continue to allow the comments. But calling people completely ignorant serves no purpose and really I can tell from your writing that your intelligent enough to know that.

So there\\\'s my thought... I think you are dead on with your points but your delivery makes makes the points mute. Noone will gain any knowledge or try to increase their intelligence or awareness because all they see is you being crass and nasty. So don\\\'t change but realize you are accomplishing nothing.

AJ...

I do think it\\\'s silly to infer that glow sticking is inherently tied to drugs/being high whatever. That just being stereotypical and serves no more purpose than Lucifer being nasty.

Wikipedia is also a incredible source of knowledge and probably the truest and least biased there is.
If you allow everyone to edit... in the end you will end up with the truest information. Granted some of it can be wrong if the very last person to edit it has been mislead or is a liar... That\\\'s true of any source though. Wikipedia has a leg up on every source in the world that if you see something there and know it is wrong.. you just fix it. That\\\'s the joy of it.

Anyhow just something to consider. You are right on about Lucifer being a jerk... serves no purpose even though his points, I very much agree with.

To the guest that was appalled,

Were there kids there that weren\\\'t doing all the bad things you listed? Were the kids there that weren\\\'t high or drunk or making out in cars? Were there kids there who were there for the right reasons?? I wasn\\\'t there so I am having to ask you and guess... I would guess though that in reality, the majority of the kids there were not doing these things. No doubt some where! But I am guess a bunch weren\\\'t.

Let me tell you my thoughts on comments like yours. If we make all encompassing statements like your comment and AJ\\\'s assessment about glow sticking... We feed kids into that stereotype, we make them think that all adults think all kids are like that. It\\\'s just like media exploiting the bad things a few bad police officers do and media exploiting the 5 or 6 horrible things US military in Iraq have done but not touching the thousands of positive things that have been accomplished. It distorts perception.

Those are just my thoughts... way too long for a comment so I apologize but this is a great discussion.
