Great American Backyard Campout PDF Print E-mail

Just in case you were wondering what you have planned for Saturday night…I’ve got the event for you!  This Saturday, June 28 is the 4th annual Great American Backyard Campout.

So, grab a flashlight and a tent or just a couple of blankets and head out to your backyard and camp like you did when you were a kid.  Even better, take your kids and camp with them at a state park – have smores and hot dogs on the camp fire.  Keep it simple.  No radios, no gameboys – just your best campfire story and a guide to local plants and animals.

If you need more reasons for why this is a great idea and so timely for us parents checkout www.greenhour.org from the National Wildlife Federation.

Oh, Cody... come on... you of the spider bite... surely a few mosquitos aren't going to take you down. I say this, of course, being an incredibly whiney person about mosquitos. I swear, if there's one within half a mile it's chewing on me.

Maybe Kate has some spare fabric softener sheets to tuck in your waistband and keep the skeeters away.

Fabric softener sheets? Does that work?

Some folks swear by it and other folks say it doesn't.

But the ones who swear by it also say to use the unscented sheets rather than the perfumed ones.

I figure it's better than that nasty oily chemical spray that's the alternative.

So I have some little kiddos and I don't like putting all those chemicals on them either. I have found that a mix of vinegar and water in a spray bottle keeps those mosquito away. It is a good safe option when you have babies and it doesn't smell any worse than bug repellent.

Vinegar and water works on most bugs. I had trouble with ants and keep a bottle of the 50/50 mix around all the time. You can also put lavender, peppermint or tea tree essential oil in it to make it smell better for you - the bugs hate it. Also, planting those things in your yard can reduce the bugs you have. Coffee grounds (used) are also supposed to be a deterrent. Not sure how it is on mosquitos but if you want to stuff some of that in your pocket and give it a try. Actually, sprinkling them around your camp site would probably keep a lot of things at bay. Except maybe the Starbucks junkies...always scary when they come out at a camp site...

When the Starbucks junkies come out, just yell "Look, it's John Mayer!" and point in the distance. They'll be gone quicker than you can say "I'd like an eight-dollar coffee, please."

I hadn't heard of vinegar and water but it sounds great to me. : )

As Josie says, it works great on ants.

I am kinda worried about those Starbuck's junkies though....there's not gonna be a full moon is there?
