This Saturday and Sunday the Gridiron Gladiators, ages 3rd grade through 6th grade, will be playing their bowl games at Gowans Stadium.  If you haven't seen them play yet, you should go check it out. It's great. Third graders playing football can be more entertaining than high school, college and pro, sometimes.

We caught up with a few Hutch High football players who had previously participated in their younger years, and thought we'd take some goofy pics for fun.

As we talked about it a little bit, the high school guys didn't have much to reflect upon. They argued over which of the two Gridiron Gladiators teams represented would have won had they played each other and they mentioned that Gowans Stadium was not nearly as nice when they got to play there. Senior Defensive Lineman Forrest Stucky mentioned that his main memory of the games as a Grade Schooler was "Being excited about getting snacks afterward".

The 3rd graders in the photo got a kick out of getting to meet and get a picture with the guys they watch on Friday nights and the Big Guys were nice enough to take the time to talk to them.  We highly recommend you stop at Gowans this weekend and check out some kids playing football in a stadium that is truly larger than life to them. The bowl games this weekend are a fundraiser for the YMCA youth football program, it's $2 for adults and $1 for kid to get in and we guarantee it's gonna be entertaining. We would love for the community to really step out come enjoy this event as well as offer a little support to the little guys and the program.

FACTS ABOUT THE GRIDIRON GLADIATORS PROGRAM

  • The YMCA took over the local private football league and joined Mid State Football League in 1998 with just 75 kids the first year. Since then participant number’s have rose to 485 kids. Hutchinson YMCA takes in kids from Hutch, Buhler, Haven, Nickerson, South Hutch, Little River, Inman, Pretty Prairie and Sterling.
  • The league consists of 33 other towns and through out the south central and southern Kansas areas.
  • Currently the Hutchinson YMCA has 21 organized teams with 105 head and asst. coaches.
  • We have played the FUN BOWL for 7years and the money generated goes to purchasing new equipment for the Football Participants for the coming years.

You see these little guys practicing all the time at Don Michaels Practice Field. They give their time up to get better. This is a great way to get the community behind them. These are Future Salthawks, Crusaders, Celtics, Bears, Panthers and Wilcats. I urge the community to come and support these fgreat and talented kids.
