I saw a mother comment on how she took her kid to the concert in the park this weekend and was disappointed with the drugs and drinking and would no longer let her child go to these events. What if instead of doing that you wrote the Mayor. I mean come on time and time again you see the police here in town parked side by side in church lots shooting the bull. What would it take for them to meander through the scene at a place like to park to make sure those things were not happening. Shouldn't it be partially up to the city and the police force to make sure there is a safe drug free place for our kids to go hang out. What are we paying for anyway. I would love to get some addresses of local officials that could do something to take care of this and write them myself. Then the kids could go and the parents could feel comfortable knowing that kind of behavior was being monitored. When it is taking place on city property the city should be keeping it safe.
Just a thought.

i would have to agree, patrolling through the park oe even utilizing the DARE officers would be beneficial, some of the DARE officers know the kids and they may feel more comfortable with them there. not a bad idea!

As a young woman (23), I remember less about what the school DARE officer told me than what my mom and dad did. Both my parents worked full time, but they always knew where I was, they would call and check up on me, and I didn't go to a concert without an adult until I was 18.

My dad, bless his heart, took me to a B.B. King blues festival when I was 14. My dad does not like rock/blues, but he went with me because I wanted to go so desperately. The music was good, and we had fun, but there were a lot of things going on there that a 14 year old should not do. It was an outdoor concert, and about an hour into it, there was a dense cloud of pot smoke hanging over the crowd clustered around the stage.

It was the first time I ever smelled pot. I asked my dad what the smell was. Then some idiot walked by waving a rebel flag (at a black man's music festival?? never made sense), shouting incoherently, and tripping over his own feet. Dad just pointed at him and said, "Honey, that's what drugs and alcohol do to you."

My parents, Dad in particular, taught me to always be alert to my surroundings and be in control of the situation, whatever that may be - a classroom, the road, or a party. I have rarely gotten drunk - not because getting drunk makes me a bad person or because the police say "don't do it", but because I will always feel the need to be aware of my surroundings and in control of the situation. I smoked pot a handful of times, but realized that whenever I did, I wasn't aware of what was going on around me.

The City should utilize the resources they can to keep kids especially from breaking the law, but when it comes to a young person saying "yes" or "no" to drugs, they're more likely to remember the wisdom of a caring parent/sibling/mentor than what some guy in a uniform told them.
