This sounds neat, but it definately deserves a vote for "most under-marketed major event ever".

FFS,

wow.. we totally agree, we were tipped off this morning that the Reno County Fair was next week and we thought "No Way???" buncha in the know guys like us and we hadn't heard about it. Then we tried to find info on the internet... ,cause there is a lot of info about most stuff on the internet, and we found a pdf on a K-state site?!?!!?

Wtf.. I am starting to understand now whne people say there is nothing to do in Hutch... It's not that there is nothing to do, it's noone tells anyone about what they are doing. And then the event people complain that noone comes to their event.

Wake up folks and quit griping that noone comes to your event... You have to get the word out.

Don't you listen to the radio. Just because something is not posted on your website does not mean it has not been promoted. The Fair and the Demo Derby have been promoted on the radio, and on a number of community calendars now for several weeks. Advertising cost big money, and the Reno County Fair Board is under funded. The fair relies on contributions from local businesses and county funding. Most of the funds raised are returned to the young people in Reno County. Local media were contacted with press details, and chose whether they would share the information or not.

Iknowaboutthefair,

Noone on here ever claimed it had to be on this website to be promoted properly. You brought the little snide comments in, so have a blast with that.

I don't listen to the radio, neither does a huge portion of the population that have ipods and mp3 players and pandora on their pc.

Please point me to the "Number of community calendars" that it is on. I saw the Chamber Calendar so you don't need to point that out. The Hutch News has a free community calendar, it's not there. I think it's a little coincidental that we post it ourselves.... Noone asked us to do it, we sought it out from a tip from a non-involved person, who has family members involved. This persons email to whatsuphutch said "I know the reno county fair is next week but I can't find any info anywhere about it".

So there you go. We post it and the first comment we get is Farley's comment above. You attitude of "it was sent to the media and then they decided..." That's the attitude that people take when they have decided to rely on someone else to promote their events.

No need to come on here and get nasty, we are trying to portray the importance to people.

Don't lecture about budgets... On here and the Hutch News are both completley free. Completely.

Sending a press release to local media doesn't cover it. You have to get proactive or just be happy with no attendance.

Send emails (free) start a facebook event and send out(free) call someone that knows what they are doing and just ask for advice (free) several good ad and coommunications firms in hutch, milk them for advice. Print flyers (almost free).

Start a blog website (free) Don't know how to start a blog??? Google "How to start a blog" (free).

Ask for help from the kids in 4-h, provide them with an email template and ask them to send out (free). Ask them to help spread the word using there facebook and myspace accounts. (free)

SENDING A PRESS RELEASE DOESN"T = MARKETING AND PUBLIC RELATIONS> and it doesn't have to cost anything.

I just found the little red link at the top of the Hutch News Calendar so my apologies there, it is there.

It is not being promoted well though, just like FFS said.

Shame on you Cody and Mitch for trying to promote something that no one asked you to! I listen to eagle radio all the time and had not heard anything either. Very nice of you to still give (free) advice - ever feel like you are talking to a brick wall on those things?

This is a prime example of how we're a town living in two different worlds - maybe more - and there's not much cross over. Some of us are largely digital folks. Some of us are largely not.

I run into this problem all the time in promoting MHA events - from the garden tour to the teas.

Advertising IS expensive, and we don't have any control over what traditional media chooses to use or not. Of course, we don't have any over non-traditional media either, unless we're doing it ourselves.

I realize that while I'm much more likely to be listening to a podcast that many folks are still listening to the radio. I am far more likely to get news online but others like their morning newspaper. So, I try to do all those things. And flyers around town. And blog about it. And have a website for it. And send direct mail. And get on local calendars. And ask others to help me promote through Facebook, email, etc. Still I have people who don't know about events.

There just is a limit to how much promotion you can do. I'm a one person staff, and while I'm a pretty good multi-tasker, there is a limit to how many things I can do in the average day.

I was a 4Her in the long ago days. Most of the folks who are involved - at least then - were volunteers. You probably saw it on the K-State website because 4H is managed through the extension service.

As I understand it - and someone correct me if I'm wrong - the 4H fair is mostly geared toward 4Hers. Others are welcome, I'm sure, but most of their audience knows about the event from other sources.

So, while we'd like to know everything about every event, realize that it's sometimes just not possible to accomplish that task. So, you do what you think is most likely to work for your target group and hope for the best.

Yes, people don't always understand how to use the various methods we have today of reaching people, but they may well have tried and true methods of reaching their folks.

At every event I do I ask for people's email addresses. Well under 10% give them. It's a shift that hasn't happened for the masses yet. You and I are there - I would rather get an email - but large chunks of the population is NOT there. They don't want to give out their email address. Or - gasp! - they don't have one.

I often ask myself the question - how would I reach me - and it's difficult to answer. It almost has to be online or through someone I know. Is that good? I'm not so sure. Is it good to be cut off from local media to the degree I am? Probably not.

We're in transition. And it's a rocky one.

Oh... and in case you haven't heard yet... MHA Victorian Tea - August 9 - www.mhatea.com... Spread the word... by whatever method you prefer. Thanks.

Good points Patsy - and I need a couple tickets.

I think it just irritated those of us non-4h-ers who were trying to spread the word outside of their world and it seemed to be unappreciated. You would think that "iknowaboutthefair" would appreciate the extra advertising and spreading of the word. Instead they chose to take the offensive stance. Sounds like a discussion we had about Hallmark, Topeka and Virginia - this site and codytalks.com bring on more instances of deja vu....more brick wall talk I guess...(perhaps the walls are starting to talk back now...)
