But what about the non-local folk who put a good deal of hard work into making the Fair happen? What about those thankless soldiers that come into town the week before? The ones who could practically put together the multi-ton machinery that flings us in everywhich direction in their sleep. And probably do. The ones that bark about how we can win a plush Stewie from Family Guy doll if we can just throw the half-inflated basketball into the warped hoop?
The carnies are the folk to whom we wanted to extend our appreciation. That's why we wanted to make our hometown a little homier for them while they're here. Thusly, the Adopt-a-Carny program was formed. The idea is for one to allow a carnival worker to stay at one's domecile during their off time at the Fair so they can be more comfortable. I was most enthusiastic about this, because I heard they have to sleep in the stables with the goats. Strangely, nobody else would participate. I stood alone in the maiden attempt of the Adopt-a-Carny program.
The lucky carny's name is Walter. I found him standing next to the Tilt-a-Whirl. I explained the program to him and offered to let him crash at my apartment while he was in town. He told me that his boss had put him up in a hotel, and that he didn't want to come to my crummy apartment. Words cannot describe the confused look on his face when I mentioned that I thought carnies had to sleep in the stables with the livestock.
Walter eventually warmed up to the idea of the Adopt-a-Carny program when he realized that he'd be able to pocket all of his per diem. He asked me if I knew where he could "get any H." I didn't know what that meant, so I enthusiastically replied "Heck, we can find you the whole alphabet! Our mission is making your stay in Hutchinson as comfortable as possible."
He's all set up to crash on the couch at my apartment now. I set him out a packet of Ramen noodles and some Spaghetti Os for lunch today, to which he replied "Dude, are you rich or something?" I explained that I am, in fact, not rich, but that I just wanted to make sure that he's comfortable while here. After all, the safety on many depend on his alertness while operating and maintaining the rides we all appreciate so much. It truly is a thankless job.
I bid him farewell and headed to work as he did the same. Stay tuned for the Day 2 update on the Adopt-a-Carny project tomorrow.
