It’s almost August. That means fall is looming like that kid at the arcade who’s better at video games than you, watching over your shoulder waiting to throw a coin in and break your streak. Preparing to end your fun. It also means that school will be starting for many of our lucky readers within the next two weeks.

It’s time to get serious about camping, fishing or whatever outdoor activities you may enjoy. Otherwise, you’ll find yourself in the same situation as me last year. Sometime mid-December, I finally realized that I had let the entire warm season slip by without getting nearly enough fishing and camping done. That, my friends, is major regret.

A couple of weeks ago, my best friend and I took his oldest son and two of his friends (5, 6 and 7 years old) out camping and fishing. It initially sounded a little scary – the two of us keeping three kids in line, but we were extremely lucky. The kids were well-behaved and had an excellent time fishing with us.

Rather than the usual olfactory endurance match that is Cheney, where we usually camp, we decided to try somewhere we hadn’t been before. His dad has suggested we try Harvey County Park, so that’s where we went. If you haven’t been, I highly recommend making a trip out there. It’s only about 30 minutes from here .

Here is a pdf map of the parks. (http://www.harveycounty.com/parks/HVCoParksMap3.pdf ) My friend and I opted for the west park, because it’s smaller and has a nice swimming hole that the kids thoroughly enjoyed. There’s also a metal cable bridge that leads across the lake to a trail shrouded in trees. We took the boys on an adventure through there in the dark with our flashlights. Make sure you bring a stick to knock down spider webs if you do this, though. I felt as though my skin was crawling by the time we got back to the tents.

Despite the fact that it rained the next day, the overall excursion was great fun. Check out Harvey County Park, if you’re looking for somewhere close that’s a lot of fun. Please also feel free to post any other places you may enjoy camping/fishing/whatever during the summer in the comments below. I’m always up for trying a new place, and I’m sure there are plenty of other readers that are game too.

I camp at Harvey County West park quite a bit, and really enjoy it. Nice to see I'm not the only one!

At certain times during the summer, they bring in pontoon boats and give the kiddos rides up and down the fishing lake. They used to have bluegrass music festivals, but they've moved on to Winfield.
