Now read this whole article EVEN if you don’t like musicals! My husband was out of town this last weekend, my kids and grandkids were on a mission to catch up on work and to start a remodeling project of my granddaughter’s bedroom and one of my closest friends who likes movies was working Saturday so I was really by myself.
I HAVE NEVER GONE TO A MOVIE BY MYSELF! EVER!
But something was really pulling me to Mama Mia – I had been on the web site several times, read the articles, seen the previews on TV and just knew it was something I would enjoy and something my husband probably would not. I also love musicals and have been fortunate to have seen The Phantom of the Opera in London and Wicked in New York and wanted to see this one (even if it was in Hutch)! I really thought my granddaughter would enjoy it as she loves musicals but her social calendar is extremely busy also so I just jumped in the car approximately 5 minutes before it started and headed for the theater. I was amazed – it was almost completely filled to capacity for an afternoon show! I had read the “reviews,” and they had not been very good – although I don’t always pay much attention to those.
Well, I loved it, and as I listened to the crowd and watched those around me throughout the show, I really felt everyone did. It was very entertaining. One of the best things for me besides the music was that my husband and I had traveled to the Greek isles two years ago, so seeing that beautiful area again was so amazing! The music is good; I found myself singing along, laughing and then there were the times a few tears fell as I thought of my daughter-in-law and the wonderful relationship she has with my granddaughter when they did the songs of “letting go” as the wedding plans and preparations start and the mother and daughter sing and dance and laugh and cry!
I was just sure when the lights came on the theater would be filled with moms, daughters, grandmothers, teenage girls, etc., - I was so wrong – every age was there, both genders and lots of smiling faces! I thought to myself – this was uplifting in this crazy, depressing world, I’m glad I went, we need more movies like this! Actually, my husband would have enjoyed it.
