Cool things just happen in life sometimes. It's one of the reasons tohaul out of bed every morning - something really cool could drop intoyour world well before 10 a.m. You just never know.

Friday night a Boston cabaret singer, Gail Gallagher, is performing forfree at the Hutchinson Art Center and this is the result of one ofthose cool things.

A few weeks ago I got an email out of the blue from Gail  - who I've never met - saying she and her husband were coming to Hutchinson for a truck rally. She had found my blog while searching for information on travel in Kansas. She wrote to ask some questions, which I was happy to answer.

In the course of a few emails she mentioned she was a singer. I saw her website address (www.gailgallagher.com) and went to check it out. She had some clips on there, as well as praise from all sorts of people and publications, including Variety, which said she was, "a delight to the eyes and ears."

So, being the busy body I am, I emailed her again, asking if she would be willing to perform while she was here. She agreed and I put Mark Rassette of the Hutchinson Reno Arts and Humanities Council in touch with her since he is an expert in such things. Mark, in his usual efficient manner, sprang into action and made it happen.

Friday, October 10, at 7 p.m. at the Arts Center, 405 N. Washington, you can enjoy Gail's concert, "Sentimental Journey," for free.

I said all of that not only to invite you to come and enjoy the music but also to make the point that this is the result of a serendipitous event - an email out of the blue - and following up on it. I'm guessing that given the number of people in Hutchinson that similar things must be a nearly daily event. Not necessarily singers coming to town for a rally, but other things that might be the beginning of cool events for our community.

If we could all pay attention to those things as they present themselves, maybe we could create an even more vibrant community. The possibilities seem limitless.

The first step is to just be aware of what comes into our worlds. Then we have to go beyond the point where we think, "Oh, gosh, that's cool..." and do something more. We can seek the help of others to make things happen. We all gain when we are engaged in our community.

Can I get definition for a moron like me on what the heck a cabaret singer is. I kinda get this picture of Dancing girls on the bar in an Old West Saloon (might just be my wish to live in the old west and frequent saloons) not real sure.

Patsy,

Break it down for me... whats a Cabaret.

She does mostly old standards, I think... things like "As Time Goes By," but if you want to think of it as an Old West Saloon, go ahead. I think it's generally those kinds of bars you see in movies, with a piano and a singer - maybe a small band. The art center will be a different kind of venue and you can use your imagination. Just don't expect Miss Kitty to pop out.
