Well, Hutchinson, it has been a long road toward today, but at long last we are back home! I know, most of you are probably thinking…what? Already?! Not possible! Apologies on the late blog entries, but yes, it is true, we are home.
For the last couple of weeks we have been running from place to place having the time of our lives to end off the grand adventure in Europe! Munich was our final European destination and we spent plenty of time here in the famous beer halls of Oktoberfest. Here we enjoyed liter upon liter of fresh beer, surrounded by Scotsmen in kilts and locals in lederhosen. A few bruised livers and several days later, we flew back to the states to enjoy some time with friends and family.
Well, fellow internet pedestrians, after nearly six months of travel, we are on the final countdown home. It officially began last weekend with an awesome Beer Festival in Brussels, Belgium, went on to Berlin, currently in Prague, and will lead us through Vienna and Munich before flying back to the states in a week. That’s right, in a short seven day period we will be returning to the USA!
But, let’s not start there. Brussels was a place that we had been to before, but were only too happy to be returning to. Two things were a big draw for us; one, a friend and two, beer. Now, this may sound a little crass, but really our weekend in Brussels was as refined as a wine tasting festival. With a large tent set up in the middle of the square, multiple brewers from around Belgium brought their best to the festivities. Not only was the beer on tap, but it was served in the correct glass to boot! Yum.
Hi there, Hutchinson! Mary here, writing from the German city of Frankfurt, hub to worldly money, the best skyline in Germany, and a museum festival that just happens to be this weekend.
It seems that where ever we go, we have great travel luck and a number of good coincidences. The museum festival this weekend is an excellent example of running into something that you least expect. As it turns out, we wandered into Frankfurt with a few too many days on our hands as we chatted with people and figured out that this city requires only a couple of days to see the major sites. However, our walking tour led to a new discovery; a museum festival this weekend! Hundreds of tents will line the riverside as Frankfurt comes to life to celebrate museums around the world. Better still, China is the host this year, so many fireworks are expected to take place!
What’s up Hutch? Kurtis here writing to you from an airplane just outside of Stockholm Sweden and having a blast. We have been in Sweden for just over four days and have been livin’ it up, Nordic style. I will start out by saying that Mary and I had not originally planned to come this far north on this journey, but made the decision to based on some cheap airfares that we found and the recommendations of a few fellow travelers. Over all Stockholm had some amazing stuff going for it and was a blast to visit for the time that we did, but in this post I just want to cover a couple of very cool things.
Hello, Hutchinson! Mary here in Amsterdam, where Kurtis and I are successfully staying on the outskirts of all the mischief!
Arriving for a short stay of three nights and four days, we were immediately swept into the craziness that is Amsterdam. One hears stories of this city and many of them are about all the ‘would-be’ illegal activities that take place here, but few people remember to mention how breathtaking it really is. As we rode our tram to the hostel, we could not help but notice the waterways that engulf the city and the many bikers that cover the streets.
Canals are so abundant here that you walk a few hundred feet and are likely to wander across a bridge. They are wide and filled with boats that people live in and use for recreation. The waterways here are a very important thing to the people of the city as they provide the link to trade and have been extremely useful in times of war to help protect Holland. As you cross over a bridge, you may hear a ‘ding-ding’ behind you before a bicyclist is upon you! It is incredible how many bikes there are here. I know that there are over 80,000 in the city of Amsterdam and in use at any given point, the bikes outnumber cars ten to one.
