When Under the Weather PDF Print E-mail

This past week I have suffered from a kidney infection, which was far from pleasant. One thing I am most definitely thankful for is how caring professors are when a serious illness can occur. When a student is under the weather, it is essential to make an appointment, luckily HCC has Student Health Services available to students who need medical treatment. When looking for colleges, whether staying close to home or going out of town, it is important to see what type of Health Services the college offers. Furthermore, if you know you will be missing class, it is important to contact your professors as soon as possible. My professors have been extremely kind during my time ‘under the weather’. If you miss a test, making it up may be possible if you stay in direct contact with teachers. This is a quality that means an enormous amount to me.

Campus Visits, Classes and More! PDF Print E-mail

I must say, it was quite nice having a snow day last Friday. It gave me time to catch up on homework, reading and vegging out. Winter is making me feel a bit melancholy, but Basketball is full into season and pep band has been keeping me busy on the weekends.

Recently, I was hired as a tutor for Student Support Services (which is amazing!) I tutor students in English. Tutoring is not only helpful for the student, but for myself as well. With my hopes of becoming an English/Foreign Language teacher, helping others gives me practice. It also opens my eyes to the diverse learning styles students have.

HCC is such a wonderful school, and there have been so many wonderful doors opened for me. This semester has been rather relaxed in a sense. My favorite classes are Honors English and my Honors College Seminar. The focal point of my seminar class is the Paradox of Affluence. This class has broadened my views on wealth, and the way it influences our society, health etc. Furthermore, I am still staying busy working in the admissions office, putting prospective students into our database and giving plenty of campus tours.

If you are currently reading this and interested in receiving a campus tour at HCC call us at 1-888-Go-Hutch! Just give at least a week's notice and we can show you around the campus, the dorms and get the opportunity to talk to professor(s) in your field of study (and you get an amazing Blue Dragons shirt!).

Anyway, that is all for now. Be well and stay warm!

One semester down PDF Print E-mail

With one semester down, I am most definitely ready to start another.

While on break I learned about many advantages of being a student at Hutchinson Community College…

With one semester down, I am most definitely ready to start another.

While on break I learned about many advantages of being a student at Hutchinson Community College…

1.Book Scholarships

-Without my book scholarship I would have paid $635.00 just in books. Now, I pity those who are at a four-year university, or at another college paying full price for their books. Book Scholarships are not terribly hard to attain. Ambassadors, Band and other types of scholastic organizations do give book scholarships – just go out and join one J

2. Advisors at HCC are amazing!

-My advisor is amazing when it comes to helping me choose classes that will help me receive my Associate’s degree and also has knowledge of the courses that will transfer to my other/future college. (Thanks Santine!)

3. Internship Opportunities

-With my Presidential Leadership Scholarship I was required to do 50hrs of interning/observing with someone in my intended career field. When an individual may think of an internship, they might instantly think of something boring. Well, my internship was observing Secondary English/Foreign Language educators in the classroom setting. It was hard, because I was not able to teach, but the teachers gave me opportunities to engage in the students’ activities. Furthermore, this internship sealed the envelope and has made me confident in the career I am pursuing.

4. Scholarship Donors

-My scholarship donors are the sweetest people on earth. Maintaining a personal relationship with those who are helping support Hutchinson Community College and one’s education is extremely important. It is also essential that students show their appreciation for all that their donors have done for them. (Thanks Mr. & Mrs. Shaffer! You’re the best! J)

5. Building and Maintaining Relationships

-During my time at HCC I can’t tell you how many staff members I have come to know. It seems like just walking through the doors I will instantly see a familiar face willing to say hello. There is so much comfort being in such a close-knit environment. The most amazing thing about it though is that the environment still allows room for personal growth. Indeed, I love Hutchinson Community College! (Oh, and I can’t tell you how many professors have PhD’s at HCC – it’s incredible!)

Christmas Break PDF Print E-mail
By Amber Aden
Monday, 28 December 2009

It surely has been awhile since I’ve posted, and I apologize immensely! Life has been its usual self full of busy-nothings. Finals went really well, and I was content with the outcome of the semester. My finals were December 7th-9th so I was finished fairly early. Grades have been posted and I am more than pleased. Christmas Break is always my favorite time of year, especially since it lasts until January 19th. During my break I’ve interned at Buhler High School in an English classroom for my Presidential Leadership Scholarship. Doing my internship gave me the confidence to know the job I intend on going into is what I truly want. I hope every had a Merry Christmas, and I plan on starting back up with more updates on school as the time nears.

Have a Safe and Wonderful New Year!
