Promise Regional Medical Center will once again be offering Strengthening Families classes beginning October 7th.
These are classes designed to improve communication skills between family members who have youths ages ten to 14. Classes begin October 7th and take place weekly for seven weeks, starting at 6pm and ending at 8:30pm. Following a family meal time where all participants spend time together, youth will spend time as a group learning skills to assist in handling frustration, peer pressure, getting along with others, and appreciating care givers in a new way. During this same time, parents will meet as a group to discuss problem-solving skills, effective ways to show love and support, and limit setting. The two groups are then rejoined for a group activity time.
Both the US Department of Education and the National Institute on Drug Abuse have recognized Strengthening Families for its effectiveness in improving desirable outcomes for youth. Evidence shows that youth on a whole who complete this program are significantly less likely to engage in alcohol consumption without parental permission for up to four years after completing the program. Lifetime use of marijuana is less than half for participants compared to other youth. In addition, aggressive behavior and tobacco use is positively affected for youth who complete Strengthening Families.
There is no fee for the program. However, as class size is limited, pre-registration is required. For registration or further information, please contact Bailey Bassinger at 620-665-4778, or email at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .
