Butler County approved a one hundred turbine wind farm a couple years ago. I had a meeting with the Butler County Manager a couple months ago. Reno County should talk to them about their process. They had a professional wind energy utility that did the entire process. The footprint of the towers is small and the turbines have no affect on the cows grazing below.

A while back on Cody's blog a link was posted to contact your representatives and ask them to support wind tax credits.

Today I received this reply from one of my reps and thought I'd share it as it applies to this topic:

Thank you for contacting me regarding the Renewable Energy and Job Creation Act of 2008 (H.R. 6049). I appreciate having the benefit of your comments on this matter.

American needs a comprehensive and balanced energy approach which is why I support extending clean energy tax incentives. However in addition to these important incentives, H.R. 6049 increases taxes on Americans across the country and includes various extraneous spending provisions including; a $1.2 billion tax earmark for New York City to build a rail line to the JFK Airport, and a new $1.6 billion tax benefit set aside for trial lawyers. This benefit would allow high-priced trial lawyers to claim a tax deduction for their up-front expenses in contingency cases, cases in which the lawyer’s compensation is based on what he or she wins for the client. Under current law, only trial lawyers whose compensation is based on winnings without regard to up-front expenses can take a deduction. Because of these measures and the impact this legislation would have on taxpayers I am unable to support H.R. 6049.

However, you may be pleased to learn that I am a cosponsor of a similar measure, the Alternative Minimum Tax and Extenders Tax Relief Act of 2008 (S. 3098). This legislation, unlike H.R. 6049, provides relief from the Alternative Minimum Tax and extends the state and local sales tax deduction through 2009. These provisions equate to billions of dollars in tax relief for hard-working Texans. S. 3098 also extends a number of clean energy production incentives including; the renewable energy production tax credit, solar energy and fuel cell investment tax credit, as well as the alternative fuels credit and other provisions aimed at improving energy efficiency. I hope Congress can quickly reconcile its differences and swiftly pass an extension of the clean energy tax incentives.

Congress must continue to enact policies that encourage conservation and develop clean energy. These strategies and programs have worked to help Texas become the nation’s leader in the production of wind energy and biodiesel. I appreciate the opportunity to represent Texans in the United States Senate. Thank you for taking the time to contact me.

Sincerely,

JOHN CORNYN
United States Senator
