I did it! Just driving down Main this AM - I popped right into Roaster 2 Eurocafe and had some of the best coffee I've had ever! It really makes a difference and the place is really decorated very nice!! It was nice meeting Bruce and having him explain his coffee "roasting" - it was fun! I'll check out the other spots also but really plan on making this a regular - they thought it was great that I heard it from "whatsuphutch" also!

If I'm going to hang out with friends, I want to be able to talk with them.

If there's a concert, I expect it to be loud because there is really no venue in Hutchinson - restaurant or coffee shop or otherwise - that is large enough that the music isn't going to be too loud to talk over. I accept this when it's live music. But, when there's not live music, I really don't need the stereo playing.

I get the whole idea of ambiance, but it should be background noise, not something I can hear well enough to make out words without really listening. I hope any business playing music in the place is abiding by BMI/ASCAP standards, because the penalties are stiff.

And my one plea for coffee shops everywhere is PLEASE... put that noisy machine in the back somewhere. We do NOT need to hear it everytime you make a cup of coffee. We get it - you're making it right now - I believe you - I don't need to participate in the process this much.

I used to suggest Metropolitan to people but quit because every time they would start the machine up all conversation would have to cease until they stopped. I LOVE Metro in every other way - comfy couches and a large selection of things other than coffee. (I'm not a coffee person.) But that grinding noise... I just couldn't take the noise. And it negated the whole purpose of going out with friends to talk if you can't talk.

I have to say the noise is the number one reason I don't go to our various coffee shops more often. I get together with friends very regularly, and it would be wonderful to just meet somewhere, but if I can't actually talk to them there's no point.

The noisy machines you hear at a coffee shop are the coffee grinder and the blender. Most coffee shops have grinders that grind small batches of beans at a time for their espresso drinks. This ensures that you get the best possible tasting coffee.

Starbucks popularized blended or "frappachino" drinks. Many coffee shops also sell smothies. Both of these drinks require blenders.

You pretty much have to keep these at the front of a coffee shop, otherwise you'd be running from the front of the store to the back every time someone wanted a drink. Most coffee shops have a very minimal staff - one or two people - who make the beverages, run the cash register, and take orders. That's why most coffee shops have everything needed to make all drinks right at the front counter.

The mechanical noise probably can't be helped, but most coffee shop owners/workers would probably oblige if you asked them to turn down music that was disrupting your conversation.

I agree with farley's_fruit_snacks. during busy hours it would be very difficult to make drinks if you have to keep running in the back of the store to make them. and if they did put them in the back and it took longer to make your drink because they have to run to the back to make it people would probably start complaining about the time it took to get their drink. i think they should leave it how it is and if you can't stand the noise then just leave.

The "If you don't like it, go somewhere else" can be a bad mindset for a business to get into. Yes, there are some niche markets where you may be the only business offering a certain item or service. However, businesses that thrive are those that try to keep their customers happy.

I'm surprised that coffee shops have not addressed the noise issue with some sort of sign or explaining it to their customers. Most customers, if they understand why something they dislike, like noise, a long wait for a particular dish, or a price increase, is necessary to the business they will overlook it. But if something is not necessary to the regular business operation - loud music, temperature, etc. - business owners/managers should be willing to accomodate the guests who are in the store at the time.

I worked in a coffee shop for a while in college, so I know what the noises Patsy was referring to are. I know that most people find them annoying (they sound like home and tasty coffee to me though!), but many people don't know what causes the noise. I try to promote coffee awareness when I can ;)

I hereby propose that all coffee shops encase their grinders/blenders/misc. noisy machines in a sound-proof glass booth. That way, they can see if someone is at the counter, all the while maintaining a peaceful atmosphere for patrons.

... maybe that's not very practical ...

I spent time at Brooks this afternoon for a late lunch and to meet a friend, and the music was lovely - pleasant, not too loud, not too soft.
